We’ve just finished a big utilisation survey project at King’s College London. Deploying over 40 staff, the survey encompassed over 2,800 offices, teaching rooms and other room types, across five campuses – spread over an estate that's over 250,000 SqM within 35 buildings.

While space utilisation surveys aren’t generally seen as the most glamorous part of what we do, they’re an essential first step in accurately uncovering the raw data necessary to model and develop any programme of effective optimisation. And while there are many practitioners out there who will undertake utilisation surveys, few have the ability to do something at this scale effectively: equipping our team with tablets running EventMAP’s Audit software enabled the recorded data to be efficiently analysed and subsequently modelled and reported on – as well as providing a facility to overlay observational survey data onto other data sources to better understand and analyse space use.

Commenting on the project, Paul Wheeler, Director of Space and Workplace Management, Estates & Facilities at King’s College London said: “The information captured through this process has directly informed our estate strategy, and has provided valuable insights into the use of space at KCL. The supply of the online Audit tool has provided us with considerably more flexibility, as we are able cut the data in more ways to fully understand space use across the institution.”
